ASSA membership

Prospective members || Current members

As the AKC parent club of the Shetland Sheepdog, ASSA membership consists of both member clubs and individual members.

Member clubs: The 70 ASSA member clubs across the country sponsor AKC-sanctioned matches, specialty shows, obedience, rally, agility, herding and tracking trials as well as educational events for members and the general public. ASSA member clubs are open to all—you don’t need to be an ASSA member to join an ASSA member club. Membership in your local club can also be an important first step in readying yourself for ASSA membership.

A local club interested in becoming an ASSA member club is required to hold licensed specialties or sanctioned “A” matches approved by the AKC. To hold licensed specialties the club must join the ASSA as a member club. For details on application procedures, see article 1, sections 1b and 3b, of the ASSA bylaws.

Individual membership: Open to US residents 18 years of age and older who are in good standing with the AKC and have achieved an AKC championship title on an AKC-registered Shetland Sheepdog:  Champion of Record (CH), Obedience Trial Champion (OTCH), Master Agility Champion (MACH), Herding Champion (HC), and/or Champion Tracker (CT). An applicant must also provide endorsements by two ASSA members in good standing, at least one of whom must reside in the same or an adjoining state.

Associate membership: Application for associate membership is open to persons over 13 years of age who are in good standing with the American Kennel Club, subscribe to the purposes of the American Shetland Sheepdog Association and agree to abide by the Constitution and By-laws of the American Shetland Sheepdog Association and the Rules of the American Kennel Club.  Applicants must have the written endorsement of one full member in good standing of the American Shetland Sheepdog Association.  Applicant’s name, address, and telephone number will be posted in “The Bulletin Board” member newsletter and screened initially by the director in the applicant’s region.  The By-laws of the Association require secret affirmative votes from two-thirds of the Board in order to elect an applicant.

United States citizens and permanent legal residents of the United States qualify for associate.  This class of membership shall be non-voting and non-office holding.  Associate members shall be entitled to participate in any ASSA members only events except those specifically excluded.  These events include, but are not limited to:

*Entrance to the Members Only section of the ASSA website

*Membership on the ASSA member yahoo list

*Participate in ASSA General Membership meetings (but not vote)

*Participate on ASSA committees (except as Chair)

*Ability to apply for ASSA college scholarship for Juniors

Associate members are not entitled to:

*Nominate officers or Directors of the ASSA

*Nominate judges for the ASSA Specialty show

*Vote in any ASSA election or at ASSA meetings

*Hold any office on the ASSA Board

*Chair any ASSA committee

*Nominate any litter for Futurity

*Sponsor another individual for membership

*Spoons, pins, and other awards available to ASSA members.  Associate members who qualify for one of these awards will receive a paper certificate instead.

Applicants must have owned and exhibited a Shetland Sheepdog in AKC Member or licensed shows in breed, junior showmanship or performance events in the United States for a minimum of five (5) years, not necessarily over a continuous period.  The applicant must have obtained at least one (1) AKC title in any venue or a 2 point conformation win on an AKC Registered Shetland Sheepdog owned or co-owned by the applicant.  Applicants under the age of 19 may qualify by having been awarded Best Junior at any ASSA National or by qualifying to compete in Junior Showmanship at Westminster with an AKC registered Shetland Sheepdog in place of the AKC title or 2 point conformation win.

Applicants must have the written endorsement of one full member in good standing of the American Shetland Sheepdog Association.  Dog breeders who sell dogs to commercial outlets will not be considered for membership.  Membership in a local Shetland Sheepdog club in the applicant’s geographical area is recommended.

The application fee will be the same as that of a full member; yearly dues will be $25.  When an Associate Member applies for full membership, the application fee will be waived.

Full members can sponsor 2 full members and 1 associate member per calendar year.
