How to Buy a Puppy

The American Kennel Club is an excellent resource for people who are looking for a new dog or puppy. If you are thinking about buying a puppy, but haven’t yet determined whether the Sheltie is the right breed for you, click here.

Buying and owning a dog is a lifetime commitment and involves many important responsibilities. You should take the time to find a responsible breeder who can provide you with a puppy who is healthy and has an appropriate temperament and personality for you and your family. Click here for some questions to think about and to ask your breeder.

A responsible breeder should be as interested in you as you are in them. Your breeder will most likely have many questions for you to help him or her determine the right puppy for you. You should also be an informed buyer, and the ASSA’s Guidelines for Ethical Behavior are a valuable resource to help you identify responsible breeders and set reasonable expectations for the sales agreement and ongoing care of your Sheltie.

Read about health concerns in Shelties here.

Once you know the right questions to ask, you can find an ASSA member breeder with our breeder locater. Your local contact will not necessarily have litters of their own available, but will provide you with contact information for nearby breeders.

You can also consider adopting a Sheltie from our national network of rescue organizations.
